円を直径で 2 つに分けたときの一方の図形（中心角 180° の扇形）。
Half of a circle, cut off by a diameter. It can mean just the arc or the region bounded by the arc and the diameter.
例文
話し言葉 A semicircle is just half a circle, so its area is half of pi r squared. 半円は円の半分だから、面積は πr² の半分だ。
書き言葉・答案 Find the area of a semicircle with a diameter of 12 cm. Leave your answer in terms of π. 直径 12 cm の半円の面積を求めよ。答えは π を用いて表せ。
言い間違えやすいところ
- 半円の周の長さ（perimeter）は、弧の長さ πr に直径 2r を足した πr + 2r。弧の長さ πr だけと取り違えない。
- semi- は「半分」の意味。OpenStax Calculus は弧としての半円を semicircular arc とも書き、semicircular は「半円の」という形容詞。
- ちょうど 180° の弧である半円の弧は、優弧（major arc）にも劣弧（minor arc）にも入れない（エントリ major-arc、minor-arc）。
- CK-12 Geometry 6.9 Arcs in Circles は semicircle を 180° の弧と定義し、6.7 では面積を求める図形の意味でも使う。日本語版 Wikipedia「円 (数学)」は、直径で分けた 2 つの弧を半円周と呼ぶ。
