2 点を結ぶ道のり（または点と図形の間の距離）のうち、最も短いものの長さ。立体の表面を通るときは、適切な展開図の上で 2 点を結ぶ線分の長さになる。
The length of the shortest path between two points, or between a point and a figure. Along the surface of a solid, it is the length of the straight segment joining the two points on a suitable net.
例文
話し言葉 To get the shortest distance along the surface of the box, unfold it into a net and draw a straight line. 箱の表面を通る最短距離は、展開図に開いてまっすぐな線を引けば分かる。
書き言葉・答案 An ant crawls on the surface of a cube with 4 cm edges from vertex A to the opposite vertex G. Find the minimum distance it must crawl. 1 辺 4 cm の立方体の表面を、アリが頂点 A から向かい合う頂点 G まで進む。進む道のりの最短距離を求めよ。
言い間違えやすいところ
- 点と直線の最短距離は、点から直線に下ろした垂線の長さ（エントリ distance-from-a-point-to-a-line）。CK-12 Geometry は点と直線・平行線の間の距離を shortest distance として説明する。
- 立体の表面にかけたひもの最短の長さは、展開図の上の線分として三平方の定理で求める（エントリ net）。
- 格子の道順の数を数える「最短経路」とは別の話（エントリ shortest-path）。こちらは道のりの長さ。
