定義
元金にだけ利息がつく利息のつき方。利息は 元金 × 年利率 × 年数 で求める。
Interest earned only on the original amount of money, called the principal. It is found with I = Prt, where P is the principal, r is the annual interest rate, and t is the time in years.
例文
話し言葉 With simple interest, you only earn interest on the principal, so you get the same amount every year. 単利だと利息がつくのは元金だけだから、毎年同じ額の利息がもらえる。
書き言葉・答案 You deposit $500 in an account that earns 4% simple interest per year. How much interest will you earn in 3 years? 年利 4 % の単利で利息がつく口座に 500 ドルを預ける。3 年間で受け取る利息を求めよ。
言い間違えやすいところ
- 英語の interest は「利息・利子」、rate は利率、元金は principal（「原理」の principle とは綴りが違う）。
- r は小数に直して代入する（4 % なら 0.04）。t は年数なので、月数で与えられたら年に直す。
- 利息にも利息がつくのは複利（エントリ compound-interest）。
