「x + 1 を A と置き換える」のような置き換えは、英語では Let A = x + 1. と宣言する形か、make the substitution（話し言葉では make a substitution とも）と言う。代入する（plug in）にも substitute を使うので、英語では両者の区別が文脈頼みになる。

書き言葉・答案 Let A = x + 1. Then (x + 1)² − 3(x + 1) + 2 = A² − 3A + 2 = (A − 1)(A − 2). x + 1 = A とおくと、(x + 1)² − 3(x + 1) + 2 = A² − 3A + 2 = (A − 1)(A − 2)。
書き言葉・答案 To solve x⁴ − 5x² + 4 = 0, make the substitution t = x² and solve t² − 5t + 4 = 0 first. x⁴ − 5x² + 4 = 0 を解くには、x² を t と置き換えて、まず t² − 5t + 4 = 0 を解く。
言い間違えやすいところ
- 日本語の「x + 1 = A とおく」は式が先だが、英語の答案では Let A = x + 1. と新しい文字を先に書く。
