ヒストグラムを中央で折ると、左右がほぼ重なる形の分布。平均値と中央値がほぼ等しくなる。
A distribution whose graph looks about the same on both sides of its center, like a mirror image. Its mean and median are about equal.
例文
話し言葉 See how the left half matches the right half? That's a symmetrical distribution, so the mean and the median are pretty much the same. 左半分と右半分がそろっているでしょう。これは左右対称な分布だから、平均値と中央値はほぼ同じだよ。

言い間違えやすいところ
- OpenStax Introductory Statistics は symmetrical と書くが、授業では symmetric distribution とも言う。どちらも「対称な」で意味は同じ。
- 左右対称でない分布は skewed（エントリ be-skewed）。skewed right は右に裾が長く、山は左に寄る。山のある側ではなく、裾の伸びる側で左右を言う。
- 左右対称な分布は正規分布（エントリ normal-distribution）に限らない。山が 2 つあっても左右がそろっていれば symmetrical。
