定義
n 個の数（データの値）の和を n で割った値。2 数 a, b では (a + b)/2。データの代表値としては平均値という。
The sum of n numbers or data values divided by n; for two numbers a and b, (a + b)/2. As a measure of center it is called the mean.
例文
話し言葉 The mean is pulled toward the outlier, but the median isn't. 平均値は外れ値のほうへ引っぱられるが、中央値はそうならない。
書き言葉・答案 Find the mean of the data: 12, 15, 15, 18, 20. データ 12, 15, 15, 18, 20 の平均値を求めよ。
話し言葉 The arithmetic mean of 4 and 16 is 10, and the geometric mean is 8. 4 と 16 の相加平均は 10、相乗平均は 8。
書き言葉・答案 For positive numbers a and b, compare the arithmetic mean (a + b)/2 with the geometric mean √(ab). 正の数 a, b について、相加平均 (a + b)/2 と相乗平均 √(ab) の大小を比較せよ。
言い間違えやすいところ
- データの平均値は mean、相加・相乗平均の不等式の文脈では arithmetic mean（相乗平均 geometric mean と対にする）と言う。用例コーパスでは the mean（the mean value theorem を除く）が話し言葉・書き言葉とも arithmetic mean よりずっと多い。
- 日常語では average とも言うが、average rate of change（平均変化率）や average value（関数の平均値）は別の概念。
- 話し言葉の arithmetic mean は大半が The Organic Chemistry Tutor。
