2 直線に 1 本の直線が交わってできる角のうち、2 直線の外側にあり、交わる直線をはさんで反対側にある 2 つの角。2 直線が平行なら等しい。
A pair of angles formed when a transversal crosses two lines, lying outside the two lines and on opposite sides of the transversal. If the two lines are parallel, the angles are congruent.
例文
話し言葉 Angles 1 and 8 are alternate exterior angles. They're both outside the parallel lines and on opposite sides of the transversal, so they're equal. ∠1 と ∠8 は外錯角。どちらも平行線の外側にあって、横断線をはさんで反対側だから等しい。

言い間違えやすいところ
- 外錯角が等しいことは、対頂角が等しいことと、錯角（または同位角）が等しいことから導ける。
- 逆の「外錯角が等しければ 2 直線は平行」は converse of the alternate exterior angles theorem と呼ぶ。
