2 本以上の直線と、それぞれ異なる点で交わる直線。同位角や錯角は、この直線に対する位置で決まる。
A line that crosses two or more other lines at different points. Pairs such as corresponding angles and alternate interior angles are named by their position relative to it.
例文
話し言葉 Line t is our transversal here. It cuts across both parallel lines, so we get eight angles to work with. ここでは直線 t が横断線。平行な 2 直線の両方を横切るから、角が 8 つできる。
書き言葉・答案 Lines ℓ and m are parallel, and line t is a transversal. One of the angles formed measures 65°. Find the measures of the other seven angles. 直線 ℓ と m は平行で、直線 t はこの 2 直線と交わっている。できる角の 1 つが 65° のとき、残り 7 つの角の大きさを求めよ。
言い間違えやすいところ
- 日本の教科書は交わる直線に名前を付けず「2 直線に 1 直線が交わるとき」と言う。英語の授業や問題文では、この直線を transversal と名前で呼ぶ。
- 同位角は corresponding angles、錯角は alternate interior angles。どちらも transversal に対する位置で決まる名前。
- 用例コーパスで transversal は話し言葉だけに出てくる（Khan Academy の中学の講義が最も多く、次が The Organic Chemistry Tutor）。
