approaches: 話し言葉・書き言葉高校向けの Khan Academy の言い方で、話し言葉の大半が Khan Academy。書き言葉（OpenStax）でもこれを使う。as x approaches 3 の形で数えた。
goes to: 話し言葉大学の講義（MIT OCW）の言い方で、書き言葉ではまれ。as x goes to 3 の形で数えた。
tends to: 話し言葉少数の言い方で、ほぼ MIT OCW だけ。as x tends to 3 の形で数えた。

変数や関数の値が、ある値にいくらでも近くなっていく。

To get as close as you like to a value.

話し言葉 As x goes to 3, this whole thing goes to 9. x が 3 に近づくと、この式全体は 9 に近づく。

書き言葉・答案 As n increases, aₙ approaches 1. n が大きくなると、aₙ は 1 に限りなく近づく。

話し言葉では as x approaches 3 と as x goes to 3 の両方を聞く（高校向けの Khan Academy は approaches、大学の講義は goes to が多い）。教科書と答案では approaches。
「限りなく」はふつう訳さない。gets arbitrarily close to は定義を説明するときの言い方で、用例コーパスには少ない。

米国の講義の書き起こし・字幕（話し言葉）と教科書・講義ノート（書き言葉）で、言い方ごとに数えた回数です。語形変化はまとめ、「…」は 1〜3 語の空き。「数えていない」はその側では数えていないことを示します。
