無縁解

定義
方程式を解く途中で両辺を 2 乗したり分母を払ったりしたときに出てくるが、もとの方程式を満たさない値。解の候補に入れてはいけない。
A value that comes out of the solving process, for example after squaring both sides or clearing denominators, but does not satisfy the original equation. It must be thrown out.
例文
話し言葉 Squaring both sides can give you an extraneous solution, so always plug your answers back into the original equation. 両辺を 2 乗すると無縁解が出ることがあるから、答えは必ずもとの方程式に代入して確かめよう。
書き言葉・答案 Solve √(2x + 3) = x and identify any extraneous solution. 方程式 √(2x + 3) = x を解け。無縁解があればそれも示せ。
言い間違えやすいところ
- √(x + 3) = x − 3 の両辺を 2 乗すると x = 1、6 が出るが、x = 1 は左辺が 2、右辺が −2 になるので無縁解。答えは x = 6 だけ。
- 日本では「解の吟味」（エントリ checking-whether-the-solution-makes-sense）で除くと言う。英語では、見つけた値が extraneous solution かどうかを check して除く。
- 無縁解があっても、残りの値が解になることはある。方程式にまったく解がない場合（エントリ no-solution）とは区別する。
