見出しの「グループ分けによる因数分解」は学習指導要領解説に無い、本プロジェクトの訳語。学習指導要領解説にも日本語版 Wikipedia「因数分解」にも、この方法の名前は出てこない（Wikipedia の因数分解の節は共通因数でくくる・たすきがけ・因数定理などで、項を組にしてくくる方法の節はない）。OpenStax Elementary Algebra（Greatest Common Factor and Factor by Grouping）は Factor by Grouping という名前で扱い、ax² + bx + c を因数分解する ac method（grouping method とも）もこの方法を使う。

定義
4 つ以上の項を 2 つずつ組にし、それぞれの組から共通因数をくくり出したあと、どの組にも現れる式でさらにくくる因数分解の方法。
A way to factor a polynomial with four or more terms: group the terms in pairs, factor out the common factor from each pair, and then factor out the expression the pairs share.

言い間違えやすいところ
- 2 つ目の組から負の数をくくり出すときは符号に注意する。xy + 5x − 2y − 10 = x(y + 5) − 2(y + 5) = (x − 2)(y + 5) で、−2 でくくると −10 は +5 になる。
- ax² + bx + c を因数分解する ac method（たすき掛け（エントリ cross-method）とは別の手順）は、bx を 2 つの項に分けて 4 項にし、この方法でくくる。2x² + 7x + 3 = 2x² + 6x + x + 3 = 2x(x + 3) + (x + 3) = (2x + 1)(x + 3)。
- 組の作り方によっては共通の式が出てこない。そのときは項の順番を入れ替えて組み直す。1 つの文字について整理する方法（エントリ arrange-by-the-variable-of-lowest-degree）とは別の手順。
