日本語の「因数分解」は名詞で、「因数分解する」と動詞にして使う。OpenStax Elementary Algebra（第 7 章 Factoring）の問題文は動詞 factor で書き（Factor completely: …、65 件）、名詞は factoring または factorization。
式と読み方

多項式を、いくつかの式（因数）の積の形に表すこと。展開の逆の操作である。
Writing a polynomial as a product of simpler expressions, called its factors. Factoring undoes multiplying out, or expanding.
例文
話し言葉 Factoring is like multiplying in reverse: we start with x² + 5x + 6 and work back to (x + 2)(x + 3). 因数分解は掛け算を逆にたどるようなもの。x² + 5x + 6 から始めて、(x + 2)(x + 3) に戻す。
書き言葉・答案 Solve x² − 7x + 12 = 0 by factoring. 因数分解を利用して、x² − 7x + 12 = 0 を解け。
言い間違えやすいところ
- 「〜を因数分解せよ」は動詞 factor を使って Factor x² − 9. と書く。factor completely は、これ以上因数分解できないところまで因数分解すること。
- 名詞の factor は「因数」（エントリ factor）。因数分解した積の形は factored form（エントリ factored-form）。
- 整数を素数の積に表すのは prime factorization（素因数分解、エントリ prime-factorization）で、多項式の因数分解とは別の見出し。
