英語には divisor 系（greatest common divisor ／ GCD）と factor 系（greatest common factor ／ GCF）の 2 系統がある。用例コーパスでは divisor 系は MIT（講義と講義ノート）、factor 系は OpenStax（Elementary Algebra・Prealgebra・Algebra and Trigonometry ほか）と The Organic Chemistry Tutor などに出る。Levin の 6.2 Introduction to Number Theory は GCD と greatest common divisor が中心で、greatest common factor も使う。factor 系は単項式・多項式の共通因数にも使い、factor out the GCF は「共通因数でくくり出す」に当たる。

言い間違えやすいところ
- GCD（greatest common divisor）は大学の数論（Levin 6.2）、GCF（greatest common factor）は学校の数学（IM Grade 6 は整数の最大公約数、OpenStax は多項式の因数分解の共通因数）で使う。
- 共通テスト・センター試験の問題文は最大公約数を言葉で書き、記号 gcd は出てこない（日本語版 Wikipedia「最大公約数」は gcd(a, b) と書く）。英語版 Wikipedia「Greatest common divisor」は gcd(a, b) と書き、(a, b) を使う著者もあると注記する。
