米国の小中学校の教材（IM・OpenStax Prealgebra）は「約数」を factor と言い、the factors of 12 のように使う。divisor も同じ意味だが、数論や割り算の文脈で使われる。factor は多項式の「因数」の意味にもなるので、日本語の「約数」と「因数」の両方に当たる。

定義
ある整数を割り切ることのできる整数。たとえば 12 の約数は 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 12 である。
A whole number that divides another number evenly, with no remainder. For example, the factors of 12 are 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, and 12.

話し言葉 What are the factors of 18? Think of pairs that multiply to 18: 1 and 18, 2 and 9, 3 and 6. 18 の約数は何かな。かけて 18 になる組を考えよう。1 と 18、2 と 9、3 と 6。

言い間違えやすいところ
- factor は多項式の「因数」（x − 2 is a factor of x² − 4、エントリ factor）や、動詞「因数分解する」（factor x² − 4）にもなる。約数の意味かどうかは文脈で決まる。
- divisor は割り算の「割る数」（a ÷ b の b、エントリ divisor-in-division）の意味にもなる。
- 「a は b の約数」は a is a factor of b ／ a divides b。逆向きの「b は a の倍数」は b is a multiple of a（エントリ multiple）。
