水平線テスト

見出しの「水平線テスト」は学習指導要領解説に無い、本プロジェクトの訳語。日本の数III では「単調増加（減少）なら逆関数がある」のように説明し、判定法に名前を付けない。英語では one-to-one（エントリ one-to-one）かどうかをグラフで確かめる方法として horizontal line test の名前で呼ぶ。
定義
関数のグラフに水平な直線を引き、どの水平線ともグラフが 2 点以上で交わらなければ、その関数は 1 対 1 で逆関数をもつと判定する方法。
A way to tell from a graph whether a function is one-to-one: if no horizontal line crosses the graph more than once, the function passes and has an inverse function.
例文
話し言葉 y = x² fails the horizontal line test, because the line y = 4 hits it at x = 2 and at x = −2. y = x² は水平線テストに通らない。直線 y = 4 と x = 2 と x = −2 の 2 点で交わるからね。
書き言葉・答案 Use the horizontal line test to determine whether f(x) = x³ + 1 has an inverse function. 水平な直線とグラフの交わり方を調べて、f(x) = x³ + 1 が逆関数をもつかどうかを判定せよ。
言い間違えやすいところ
- 「通る／通らない」は pass ／ fail the horizontal line test と言う。
- OpenStax Algebra and Trigonometry は、三角関数のグラフは horizontal line test に通らない（fail）と書く。逆関数を考えるには定義域を制限する（エントリ restricted-domain）。
- 関数かどうかを判定する vertical line test（エントリ vertical-line-test）とは別の判定法。日本語の「水平線」は海の水平線（horizon）の意味にもなるが、ここでは水平な直線のこと。
