垂直線テスト

見出しの「垂直線テスト」は学習指導要領解説に無い、本プロジェクトの訳語。日本では「x の値を決めると y の値がただ 1 つに決まるとき y は x の関数」という定義で考え、グラフでの判定法に名前を付けない。OpenStax Algebra and Trigonometry・Intermediate Algebra は vertical line test の名前で扱う。
定義
座標平面上のグラフに垂直な直線を引き、どの垂直線ともグラフが 2 点以上で交わらなければ、それは y が x の関数であるグラフだと判定する方法。
A way to tell whether a graph shows y as a function of x: if no vertical line crosses the graph more than once, the graph passes and represents a function.
例文
話し言葉 The circle fails the vertical line test: the line x = 0 hits it at y = 1 and at y = −1. この円は垂直線テストに通らない。直線 x = 0 と y = 1 と y = −1 の 2 点で交わるからね。
書き言葉・答案 Use the vertical line test to determine whether the graph represents y as a function of x. 垂直な直線とグラフの交わり方を調べて、このグラフが y を x の関数として表しているかどうかを判定せよ。
言い間違えやすいところ
- 「通る／通らない」は pass ／ fail the vertical line test と言う。円 x² + y² = 1 は通らない。
- ここでの vertical は「上下方向の」（x = a の形の直線）の意味。日本語の「垂直」が表す「直交する」は perpendicular（エントリ perpendicular）。
- 1 対 1 かどうか（逆関数をもつか）を判定する horizontal line test（エントリ horizontal-line-test）とは別の判定法。
