直角三角形で、直角の向かいにある辺。3 辺のうちでいちばん長い。
In a right triangle, the side across from the right angle. It is always the longest of the three sides.

話し言葉 Find the little square that marks the right angle; the side straight across from it is the hypotenuse. 直角を表す小さな四角の印を探して。そのまっすぐ向かいにある辺が斜辺だよ。
書き言葉・答案 The legs of a right triangle are 6 cm and 8 cm long. Find the length of the hypotenuse. 直角三角形の直角をはさむ 2 辺の長さが 6 cm と 8 cm である。斜辺の長さを求めよ。
言い間違えやすいところ
- 発音は「ハイポテニュース」に近く、pot の音節を強く読む（Merriam-Webster: hī-ˈpä-tə-ˌnüs）。
- 直角をはさむ 2 辺は legs（1 本なら a leg）と呼ぶ。三平方の定理 a² + b² = c² では a と b が legs、c が hypotenuse。
- hypotenuse は直角三角形の辺の名前。直角三角形でない三角形のいちばん長い辺は hypotenuse とは呼ばない。
