定義
仮定から推論を進めた結果、矛盾が生じる。背理法で、仮定が誤りだと結論する直前の段階。
To reach, by valid reasoning from an assumption, a statement that conflicts with the assumption or with a known fact, which shows that the assumption must be false.
例文
話し言葉 Assume there's a largest prime. We're going to arrive at a contradiction pretty quickly. 最大の素数があると仮定しよう。すぐに矛盾が生じる。
話し言葉 If we plug that back in, we get a contradiction, so that case can't happen. それを代入し直すと矛盾する。だからその場合は起こらない。
書き言葉・答案 Assuming that √2 is rational, we arrive at a contradiction. Hence √2 is irrational. √2 が有理数であると仮定すると矛盾する。よって √2 は無理数である。
言い間違えやすいところ
- 主語に注意。arrive at ／ get ／ reach a contradiction の主語は we（証明する人）、lead to a contradiction の主語は仮定（This assumption leads to a contradiction）。
- 「A は B と矛盾する」は A contradicts B（他動詞で目的語が要る）。This contradicts the fact that n is odd. のように使う。
