定義
命題の否定をつくる。「すべての x について P」の否定は「ある x について P でない」になり、その逆も成り立つ。
To form the negation of a statement; negating "for all x, P(x)" gives "there exists an x such that P(x) is false," and vice versa.
例文
話し言葉 When you negate "for all," it turns into "there exists." 「すべての」の否定をとると「ある」に変わる。
話し言葉 If you negate "p and q," you get "not p or not q." 「p かつ q」の否定をとると「p でない または q でない」になる。
書き言葉・答案 Negate the statement: For every real number x, x² ≥ 0. 命題「すべての実数 x について x² ≧ 0」の否定をつくれ。
言い間違えやすいところ
- negate は「否定をとる（否定の命題をつくる）」で、「否定する（正しくないと主張する）」ではない。P を negate しても P が偽だと言ったことにはならない。
- 「x > 0」の否定は「x ≦ 0」（英語でも x ≤ 0）。x < 0 にしない。
