定義
ある命題とその否定が両方とも導かれること（両方が成り立つことはない）。背理法では、仮定から矛盾を導いて仮定が誤りだと結論する。
A situation in which a statement and its negation have both been derived, which cannot actually be the case; in a proof by contradiction, reaching one shows that the starting assumption was false.
例文
話し言葉 But we said n was odd, and now it's even. That's a contradiction. でも n は奇数だと言ったのに、今度は偶数になった。これは矛盾だ。
書き言葉・答案 This is a contradiction, since p and q were assumed to have no common factor. p と q は互いに素と仮定したので、これは矛盾である。
言い間違えやすいところ
- 動詞の「矛盾する」は別エントリ（lead-to-a-contradiction：arrive at ／ lead to ／ get a contradiction）。「仮定に矛盾する」は contradicts the assumption と動詞 contradict を使う。
- 用例コーパスでは話し言葉はすべて MIT OCW で、背理法（proof by contradiction）の説明の中で出てくる。
- OpenStax Elementary Algebra・Intermediate Algebra は、解の無い方程式（すべての値で偽になる方程式）も contradiction と呼び、identity・conditional equation と並べる。Algebra and Trigonometry・Precalculus は連立方程式を消去して出る 3 = 0 のような文を contradiction と呼ぶ。
