日本語の「対称の軸」は、線対称な図形を折り返す直線にも、図形を対称移動するときの直線にも使う。英語では、線対称な図形の直線を line of symmetry、図形を対称移動するときの直線を line of reflection と言い分ける。放物線の軸は axis of symmetry（エントリ axis-of-symmetry）。
定義
線対称な図形で、その直線で折り返すと両側がぴったり重なる直線。図形を対称移動するときに折り返しの基準にする直線もこう呼ぶ。
A line that splits a figure into two halves that match exactly when you fold along it. The line a figure is flipped over in a reflection is called the line of reflection.
例文
話し言葉 The diagonal of a rectangle isn't a line of symmetry — fold along it and the corners don't match up. 長方形の対角線は対称の軸じゃないよ。対角線で折っても、角がぴったり重ならないでしょ。
書き言葉・答案 Triangle A′B′C′ is the image of triangle ABC after a reflection. Draw the line of reflection. △A′B′C′ は △ABC を対称移動した図形である。対称の軸をかき入れよ。
言い間違えやすいところ
- line of symmetry は 1 つの図形の中にある直線で、図形によって本数が違う（長方形は 2 本、正方形は 4 本、円は無数）。line of reflection は、もとの図形と対称移動した像（image）の 2 つの間にある直線。
- 「対称の軸は何本あるか」は How many lines of symmetry does it have? 複数形は lines of symmetry で、symmetry は単数のまま。
- 放物線の軸は axis of symmetry（エントリ axis-of-symmetry）。英語で axis とだけ言うと x 軸・y 軸（x-axis, y-axis）とまぎれる。
