日本語の「線対称」は図形の性質の名前で、「この図形は線対称である」と言う。英語ではこれを has line symmetry ／ is symmetric about a line の形で言う。CK-12 Geometry はこの性質を reflection symmetry と呼ぶ。
定義
図形をある直線で折り返すと、両側がぴったり重なる性質。その直線を対称の軸という。
The property a figure has when you can fold it along a line so that the two halves match exactly. The fold line is called the line of symmetry.

言い間違えやすいところ
- symmetry は名詞なので、「この図形は線対称だ」は The figure has line symmetry. または The figure is symmetric about a line.（形容詞は symmetric、エントリ symmetric）。is line symmetry とは言わない。
- 線対称な図形の対称の軸は line of symmetry（エントリ line-of-reflection）。1 本とは限らず、正方形には 4 本ある。
- 点対称（エントリ point-symmetry）と区別する。線対称は直線で折り返して重なる性質、点対称は点のまわりに 180° 回転して重なる性質。
