定義
合同式 a ≡ b (mod n) の n のこと。a − b が n で割り切れるとき、a と b は n を法として合同という。
The positive integer n in a congruence a ≡ b (mod n), read "a is congruent to b modulo n"; n itself is called the modulus. Two integers are congruent modulo n when n divides their difference.
例文
話し言葉 17 is congruent to 2 modulo 5, because 17 minus 2 is divisible by 5. 17 − 2 は 5 で割り切れるので、17 は 5 を法として 2 と合同（17 ≡ 2 (mod 5)）。
書き言葉・答案 If a ≡ b (mod n), then a + c ≡ b + c (mod n). a ≡ b (mod n) ならば a + c ≡ b + c (mod n)。
言い間違えやすいところ
- 法そのもの（名詞）は modulus と言う（Nicholson（8.8）は n を the modulus と呼び、Levin 6.2 も divide the modulus と書く）。複素数の絶対値（modulus of a complex number）と同じ綴り。
- ≡ は is congruent to と読む。図形の「合同」と同じ単語 congruent を使う。
- 日本語の「5 を法として」は modulo 5。Levin（6.2）は 8 ≡ 23 (mod 5) を eight is congruent to 23 modulo five と読み、just mod five とも言うと書く。
