f of x equals the quantity x minus two squared, times the quantity x plus one
定義
多項式を因数分解したとき、因数 (x − a) が現れる回数。これを零点 x = a の重複度という。
The number of times a factor (x − a) appears when a polynomial is completely factored. That number is the multiplicity of the zero x = a.
例文
話し言葉 The factor x minus 2 is squared, so the zero at 2 has multiplicity 2, and the graph just touches the axis and bounces back. x − 2 が 2 乗されているから、x = 2 の零点は重複度 2。グラフは x 軸に接して跳ね返るだけだよ。
書き言葉・答案 Find the zeros of f(x) = x(x + 3)³ and state the multiplicity of each. f(x) = x(x + 3)³ の零点を求め、それぞれの重複度を答えよ。
言い間違えやすいところ
- 日本の高校では重解（エントリ double-root）までで、重複度という語は大学で使う。重解は重複度 2 の解に当たる。
- OpenStax Algebra and Trigonometry は、x 切片でのグラフのようすを零点の multiplicity で読む。奇数なら x 軸を横切り、偶数なら x 軸に接して跳ね返る。
- 線形代数の固有値の重複度（エントリ algebraic-multiplicity）とは別の場面の語。
