定義
f(x) = aₙ xⁿ + … + a₁x + a₀ のように、x の多項式で表される関数。一次関数や二次関数もその仲間である。
A function whose rule is a polynomial in x, such as f(x) = 2x³ − x + 5. Linear and quadratic functions are polynomial functions too.
例文
話し言葉 Linear and quadratic functions? Those are both polynomial functions, just with degree 1 and degree 2. 一次関数と二次関数？ どちらも多項式関数で、次数がそれぞれ 1 と 2 なだけだよ。
書き言葉・答案 Find the degree and the leading coefficient of the polynomial function f(x) = −3x⁴ + 2x² − 7. 多項式関数 f(x) = −3x⁴ + 2x² − 7 の次数と最高次の係数を求めよ。
言い間違えやすいところ
- 多項式（エントリ polynomial）は式、polynomial function はその式で x の値から f(x) の値を決める関数。
- 次数（degree）は最高次の項の次数。英語の degree は角度の「度」にも使う。
- グラフはなめらかで切れ目がない。分母に x を含む関数（エントリ rational-function）は polynomial function ではない。
