日本語の「上に凸」は放物線にも一般の曲線にも使うが、英語では放物線には opens downward ／ opens down（開く向き）、一般の曲線には concave down（凹凸）と言い分ける。用例コーパスでは話し言葉・書き言葉とも opens downward のほうが opens down より多い。

グラフが上にふくらんだ形であること。二次関数 y = ax² + bx + c では a < 0 のとき放物線が上に凸で、頂点が最も高い点になる。

例文
話し言葉 The leading coefficient is negative, so this parabola opens downward and the vertex is the max. 最高次の係数が負なので、この放物線は上に凸で、頂点で最大になる。

言い間違えやすいところ
- 「上に凸」を convex upward と直訳しない（用例コーパスには出てこない）。放物線は opens downward ／ opens down、一般の曲線は concave down と言う。
- 日本語は「上」、英語は down（下に開く）で、上下の単語が逆になる。
