定義
(a + b)² や (a − b)² を展開した形の、3 つの項からなる式。たとえば x² + 6x + 9 = (x + 3)² である。
A trinomial that is the square of a binomial, such as x² + 6x + 9 = (x + 3)². It has the form a² + 2ab + b² or a² − 2ab + b².
例文
話し言葉 x² + 10x + 25 is a perfect square trinomial: half of 10 is 5, and 5 squared is 25, so it's (x + 5)². x² + 10x + 25 は完全平方式。10 の半分が 5 で、5 の 2 乗が 25 だから、(x + 5)² になる。
書き言葉・答案 Find the value of c that makes x² − 14x + c a perfect square trinomial. x² − 14x + c が完全平方式になるような c の値を求めよ。
言い間違えやすいところ
- perfect square だけだと、16 や 25 のような平方数の意味にもなる。3 つの項の式であることを表すのが trinomial。IM Algebra 1（7.11 What are Perfect Squares?）は x² + 6x + 9 のような式そのものも perfect square と呼ぶ。
- まん中の項が 2ab になっているかを確かめる。x² + 6x + 16 は、x² と 16 = 4² がどちらも 2 乗でも、2 × x × 4 = 8x にならないので完全平方式ではない。
- x² + bx に (b/2)² を足して完全平方式を作るのが平方完成（エントリ completing-the-square）。
