英語の principal square root は、OpenStax Algebra and Trigonometry では負でない平方根（0 の平方根 0 も含む）、OpenStax Prealgebra・Elementary Algebra では正の平方根と定義され、記号 √a はこれを表す。日本語版 Wikipedia「平方根」は √a を正の（あるいは非負の）平方根、主平方根と書く。0 を含めるかどうかは日米どちらの資料でも割れる。英語では positive square root とも言い、話し言葉では principal root とも言う。

定義
正の数 a の 2 つの平方根のうち、正のほう。記号 √a はこの数を表す。
The nonnegative square root of a number, written with the radical sign as √a. For a positive number a, it is the positive one of its two square roots, and the principal square root of 0 is 0.
例文
話し言葉 25 has two square roots, 5 and negative 5, but the radical sign means the principal square root, so √25 is just 5. 25 の平方根は 5 と −5 の 2 つあるけど、根号が表すのは正の平方根だから、√25 は 5 だけ。
書き言葉・答案 Find the principal square root of 0.49. 0.49 の正の平方根を求めよ。
言い間違えやすいところ
- OpenStax Algebra and Trigonometry の principal square root は 0 の平方根 0 も含む「負でない平方根」。日本語の「正の平方根」は字のとおりなら 0 を含まない（日本語版 Wikipedia「平方根」は「正の（あるいは非負の）平方根」と書く）。
- 負のほうの平方根は −√a で、the negative square root と言う（エントリ square-root-of-a-number）。
- 「25 の平方根」は ±5 の 2 つだが、√25 は 5 だけを表す。√25 = ±5 とは書かない。
