平方根を表すときに使う記号 √。√ の下に書いた数や式の平方根を表す。

話し言葉 Everything under the radical sign gets simplified first, so do 16 plus 9 before you take the square root. 根号の中身を先に計算するから、平方根をとる前に 16 + 9 をやって。

言い間違えやすいところ
- 日本語版 Wikipedia「根号」は √2 に「ルート 2」と読みを添える。英語では記号そのものを radical sign（radical symbol、IM は square root symbol）と呼び、√a は the square root of a と読む（IM Grade 8）。話し言葉では root two のように root だけでも読む（用例コーパス。エントリ square-root）。英語で root と言うと、方程式の解（roots of an equation）の意味にもなる。
- 根号の中の数や式は radicand と呼ぶ。根号を含む式は radical expression（エントリ radical-expression）。
- 根号は横線の下にある部分全体にかかる。√(16 + 9) = √25 = 5 で、√16 + √9 = 4 + 3 = 7 とは違う。
- 3 乗根は √ の左上に小さく 3 を書いて、∛8 = 2 のように表す（エントリ nth-root）。
