定義

同じ数を 2 個掛け合わせること、またはその結果。a の平方（a の 2 乗）を a² と書く。

The result of multiplying a number by itself, written with an exponent of 2, as in a². As a verb, to square a number means to multiply it by itself.

例文

話し言葉 When you square negative 6, you get positive 36, because a negative times a negative is positive. −6 を 2 乗すると 36。負 × 負は正だからね。
書き言葉・答案 Find the square of 0.3. 0.3 の 2 乗を求めよ。
書き言葉・答案 Square both sides of √x = 9 to find x. √x = 9 の両辺を 2 乗して、x を求めよ。

言い間違えやすいところ

  • square は「正方形」（エントリ square-shape）と同じ語で（1 辺 x の正方形の面積が x²）、平方根も square root と言う。数の 2 乗か、図形の正方形か、根号かは前後の語で見分ける。
  • x² は x squared と読む。動詞の square は「2 乗する」で、square both sides は「両辺を 2 乗する」。
  • (−6)² は 36、−6² は −(6²) で −36。口で negative six squared と言うとどちらか分からないので、かっこの有無を確かめる。
