底

定義

累乗 aⁿ で、繰り返し掛け合わせる数 a のこと。指数関数 y = aˣ や対数（a を底とする log）の a も底という。

In a power aⁿ, the base a is the number being multiplied by itself, and the exponent n tells how many times it is used as a factor. The same word is used for the base of a logarithm, as in log base 2.

言い間違えやすいところ

• 英語の base は三角形の底辺（エントリ base-of-a-triangle）、立体の底面（エントリ base-of-a-solid）、10 進法（base ten、エントリ base-n）にも使う同じ単語。文脈で見分ける。
• 対数の底も base で、log₂ 8 は log base 2 of 8 と読む。
• −3² の底は 3 で、値は −9。(−3)² の底は −3 で、値は 9。かっこがあるかどうかで底が変わる。
