定義
a > 0, a ≠ 1、M > 0 のとき、aᵖ = M となる p を log_a M と書き、a を底とする M の対数という。
For a > 0, a ≠ 1 and M > 0, the number p with aᵖ = M, written log_a M: the logarithm of M to the base a.
例文
話し言葉 A logarithm is just an exponent: log base 2 of 8 is the exponent you put on 2 to get 8, so it's 3. 対数は指数のこと。log₂ 8 は、2 を何乗すれば 8 になるかの、その指数。だから 3。
書き言葉・答案 Find the value of log₃ 81 − log₂ (1/8). log₃ 81 − log₂(1/8) の値を求めよ。
言い間違えやすいところ
- log₂ 8 は log base 2 of 8 と読む。
- OpenStax Algebra and Trigonometry（6.3）と Intermediate Algebra（10.3）は、底を省いた log x を常用対数（底 10）、ln x を自然対数とする（学習指導要領解説には ln が出てこない）。
