次数が 2 の式。x² + 3x − 4 のように、2 次の項をふくみ、3 次以上の項をふくまない式。
A polynomial expression of degree 2, such as x² + 3x − 4. In one variable, it can be written as ax² + bx + c with a ≠ 0.
例文
話し言葉 The highest power of x is 2, so it's a quadratic expression; if there were an x cubed, it wouldn't be. x の最高次が 2 だから、これは二次式。x³ があったら二次式じゃない。

言い間違えやすいところ
- quadratic は「2 次の」。quad- から「4」を連想しやすいが、ここでは「正方形」（x² は正方形の面積）から来ている。4 次は quartic（エントリ quartic-equation）。
- 二次方程式は quadratic equation、二次関数は quadratic function と、「二次」はどれも quadratic。一次は linear（エントリ linear-expression）、三次は cubic。
- ax² + bx + c で a = 0 なら 1 次式になる。二次式であるためには a ≠ 0 が必要。
