IM Grade 7（1.7 Scale Drawings）は、長さを同じ割合で拡大した scale drawing にも縮小した scale drawing にも scale を使う。日本語の「縮尺」は縮めて表した割合で、日本語版 Wikipedia「縮尺」は実物より大きい図面・模型の比を倍尺、実物大を現尺と呼んで縮尺と分ける。
定義
地図や縮図で、実際の長さをどれだけの割合に縮めて表したかを示すもの。1 : 25000 のような比で書く。
On a map or a scale drawing, the relationship between lengths in the drawing and the actual lengths they stand for, such as 1 : 25,000 or 1 inch = 10 miles.
例文
話し言葉 The scale of the map is 1 inch to 10 miles, so 3 inches on the map is 30 miles in real life. この地図の縮尺は 1 インチが 10 マイルだから、地図上の 3 インチは実際には 30 マイルだ。

言い間違えやすいところ
- 拡大・縮小の比（何倍にするか）は scale factor（エントリ scale-factor）で、別の用語。縮尺の scale は、図の上の長さと実際の長さの対応を言う。
- IM Grade 7（1.11・1.12）は、単位のない縮尺（1 to 633,600 のような scale without units）と、1 inch to 10 miles のような単位のある縮尺の両方を扱う。実際の長さを求めるときは、単位をそろえてから計算する。
- scale は、グラフの軸の目盛り（the scale on the y-axis）や、はかりの意味にもなる。「縮尺」の意味かどうかは文脈で決まる。
