定義
一方の図形を拡大または縮小すると、他方の図形にぴったり重なること。対応する角はそれぞれ等しく、対応する辺の比はすべて等しい。
Having the same shape, so that one figure can be enlarged or shrunk and then moved to fit exactly on the other. Corresponding angles are equal, and corresponding sides are proportional.
例文
話し言葉 The rectangles are similar because each side of the big one is 3 times the matching side of the small one. 大きい長方形の各辺は、小さい長方形の対応する辺の 3 倍だから、この 2 つの長方形は相似だ。
書き言葉・答案 Triangle ABC is similar to triangle DEF, with AB = 6, BC = 8, and DE = 9. Find EF. △ABC ∽ △DEF で、AB = 6、BC = 8、DE = 9 のとき、EF の長さを求めよ。
言い間違えやすいところ
- 日常語の similar は「似ている」という広い意味。数学の similar は「拡大・縮小すると重なる」という決まった意味で、形がなんとなく似ているだけでは similar とは言わない。
- 英語の similar は形容詞で、two figures are similar ／ triangle ABC is similar to triangle DEF と言う。相似の記号は、中学校学習指導要領解説（〔用語・記号〕）では ∽、IM Geometry・CK-12 Geometry では ∼（△ABC ∼ △DEF）。どちらも triangle ABC is similar to triangle DEF と読む。名詞の「相似」は similarity。
- 相似な三角形はエントリ similar-triangles、相似比はエントリ scale-factor。合同（congruent）は、相似のうち大きさも同じ場合。
