解の組

日本語の「解の組」は方程式を満たすことまで含む言い方だが、英語の ordered pair は x と y の値を順に並べた組そのものを指し、座標平面上の点の座標にも使う。解であることは The solution is the ordered pair (2, 3). のように文で言う。

定義
2 つの文字をふくむ方程式（や連立方程式）を成り立たせる、x の値と y の値の組。x = 2, y = 3 や (x, y) = (2, 3) のように書く。
An ordered pair (x, y) of values that makes an equation in two variables, or every equation in a system, true. The x-value is written first and the y-value second.
例文
話し言葉 x = 2 and y = 3 work in both equations, so the solution is the ordered pair (2, 3). x = 2, y = 3 は両方の式を満たすから、解の組は (2, 3) だ。
書き言葉・答案 Which ordered pair is a solution of 3x − y = 5: (1, 2), (2, 1), or (3, 3)? (1, 2)、(2, 1)、(3, 3) のうち、方程式 3x − y = 5 の解の組になっているものを選べ。
言い間違えやすいところ
- ordered pair は座標平面上の点の座標にも使う（エントリ coordinates）。解の組 (2, 3) は、グラフでは点 (2, 3) に当たる。
- ordered（順序のある）は、(2, 3) と (3, 2) が別の組であることを表す。x の値を先、y の値を後に書く。
- センター試験の問題文は不定方程式の解を「x = ア，y = イウ」と分けて書き、組で答えるときは「(A, B) = (49 × ク，23 × ケコ)」と書く（平成31年度 本試験 数学Ⅰ・数学Ａ 第4問）。英語では The solution is the ordered pair (2, 3). のように、ordered pair 1 つで解を言う書き方もある。
