日本語の「場合分けする」は 1 語の動詞だが、英語では consider two cases ／ break it into cases のように cases を目的語にした句で言う。二次関数の最大・最小で「軸の位置で場合分けする」と言うときは、英語で説明するなら頂点（軸）が区間の左・内側・右のどこにあるかで cases を分ける、という言い方になる。

条件によって結論や計算が変わるとき、起こりうる場合を漏れなく重複なく分けて、それぞれについて考える。

例文
話し言葉 Let's consider two cases: x ≥ 0 and x < 0. x ≧ 0 と x < 0 の 2 つの場合に分けて考えよう。
書き言葉・答案 To find the minimum of f(x) = x² − 2ax on 0 ≤ x ≤ 2, consider three cases: a < 0, 0 ≤ a ≤ 2, and a > 2. 0 ≦ x ≦ 2 における f(x) = x² − 2ax の最小値を求めるには、a < 0、0 ≦ a ≦ 2、a > 2 の 3 つの場合に分けて考える。
書き言葉・答案 To count the even three-digit numbers with distinct digits, consider two cases: the last digit is 0, or it is not. 異なる 3 つの数字を並べてできる 3 桁の偶数の個数は、一の位が 0 の場合と 0 でない場合に分けて数える。
言い間違えやすいところ
- 答案では Case 1: x ≥ 0 ／ Case 2: x < 0 のように見出しを立てて書くと、どの場合を扱っているかがはっきりする。
- 「場合の数」は number of cases ではない（分野名は counting、個数は the number of ways）。「場合分け」の case と混同しない。
