定義
等式（不等式）の両辺の対数を考えて、指数を係数に下ろす。
To apply a logarithm to each side of an equation (or inequality) so that exponents come down as coefficients.
例文
話し言葉 Take the log of both sides, and the x comes down in front. 両辺の対数をとると、x が前に下りてくる。
書き言葉・答案 Solve 3^x = 20 by taking the logarithm of both sides. Give the answer to three decimal places. 両辺の対数をとって 3ˣ = 20 を解け。答えは小数第 3 位まで求めよ。
言い間違えやすいところ
- 書き言葉（OpenStax Algebra and Trigonometry・Calculus）は log を略さず、take the logarithm of each side ／ take the natural logarithm of both sides と書く。
- 底を 10 にするか e にするかは自由（OpenStax Intermediate Algebra（10.5）は、どちらをとっても同じ結果になると書く）。OpenStax Algebra and Trigonometry（6.6）の手順は、底 10 の項があれば常用対数、なければ自然対数をとる。
