角柱・円柱で、向かい合って平行な 2 つの面。角錐・円錐では、頂点と向かい合う 1 つの面をいう。
One of the two parallel, congruent faces of a prism or cylinder, or the face of a pyramid or cone that is opposite its vertex. The height of the solid is measured perpendicular to the base.
例文
話し言葉 A cone has just one base, and it's a circle, but a cylinder has two. 円錐の底面は 1 つだけで、円。でも円柱には底面が 2 つある。
書き言葉・答案 The base of a pyramid is a regular hexagon. Find the number of faces, edges, and vertices of the pyramid. 底面が正六角形の角錐がある。この角錐の面の数、辺の数、頂点の数を求めよ。
言い間違えやすいところ
- 英語の base は、三角形の底辺（エントリ base-of-a-triangle）や累乗の底（エントリ base-of-a-power）にも使う同じ単語。立体の底面かどうかは、the base of the prism のような前後の語で見分ける。
- 角柱・円柱には底面が 2 つあり、複数形は bases。底面積は area of the base（エントリ area-of-the-base）で、公式 V = Bh では大文字の B で書く。
- 底面は、下に置いた面とは限らない。横に倒して置いた三角柱でも、底面は三角形の 2 つの面。
