用例コーパスと参照（CED・OpenStax・IM・CK-12）には決まった言い方が出てこない。IM Geometry は 7.4 で circumscribed about を 1 回使い、用語集は a polygon is circumscribed by a circle と内側の図形を主語にする。日本語の「外接する」は、2 円が互いの外側にあって 1 点を共有する場合にも使う（日本語版 Wikipedia「円 (数学)」の節「位置関係」）が、IM Geometry の用語集は circumscribed を多角形と円の関係で定義し、2 円が外側で接する場合は CK-12 Geometry（6.2 Identify Circle Components）が externally tangent と書く。
定義
図形が別の図形の外側にあって、内側の図形の各頂点を周上に通る（円が多角形に外接する）か、内側の円に各辺が接する（多角形が円に外接する）こと。
To lie outside another figure and pass through all of its vertices (a circle circumscribed about a polygon), or to have every side tangent to it (a polygon circumscribed about a circle).

言い間違えやすいところ
- 向きは日本語と同じ。A is circumscribed about B は「A が B に外接する」で、A が外側。内側の図形を主語にして B is inscribed in A と言い換えられる（英語版 Wikipedia「Inscribed figure」は 2 つの言い方を同じ意味とする）。
- IM Geometry の用語集は、a polygon is circumscribed by a circle（多角形が円に内接する）と by を使って内側の図形を主語にする。about と by で主語が入れ替わるので注意。
- CK-12 Geometry（4.22 Concurrence and Constructions）は三角形の外接円を、3 つの頂点すべてを通る円として説明する。
- 「2 円が外接する」は externally tangent（CK-12 Geometry 6.2 Identify Circle Components）。多角形と円の関係の circumscribed と取り違えない。
