和が 90° になる 2 つの角の、一方から見た他方の角。θ の余角は 90° − θ。
Two angles are complementary when their measures add up to 90°; the complement of an angle θ is 90° − θ.
例文
話し言葉 The acute angles of a right triangle always add to 90, so they're complementary angles: if one is 30, the other is 60. 直角三角形の 2 つの鋭角は足すと 90° になるので余角どうしだ。一方が 30° なら他方は 60° だ。
書き言葉・答案 Two complementary angles differ by 18°. Find the measure of each angle. 互いに余角である 2 つの角の差は 18° である。それぞれの角の大きさを求めよ。
言い間違えやすいところ
- 「補角」は supplementary、「余角」は complementary。「補」の字から complement を補角と取り違えやすい。
- complement は「補集合」「余事象」にも使う（the complement of A）。三角関数の cosine の co- も、英語版 Wikipedia「Sine and cosine」（Etymology）によると余角（complement）の sine の意味（cofunction-identity）。
- complementary（補い合う）と complimentary（無料の、ほめる）はつづりが 1 字違い。
