日本の高校では csc を使わず 1/sin θ と書く。米国の教科書（OpenStax Algebra and Trigonometry）は csc・sec・cot を sin・cos・tan の逆数として定義し、微積分の公式にも csc・sec・cot が出てくる（d/dx cot x = −csc²x）。

定義
sin の逆数で表される三角関数。csc θ = 1/sin θ で、直角三角形では 斜辺 ÷ 対辺。
The trigonometric function that is the reciprocal of sine: csc θ = 1/sin θ. In a right triangle, it is the hypotenuse divided by the opposite side.
例文
話し言葉 Cosecant is just the reciprocal of sine, so if sine is 3/5, cosecant is 5/3. コセカントはサインの逆数だから、サインが 3/5 ならコセカントは 5/3。
書き言葉・答案 In right triangle ABC, angle C is a right angle, AB = 13, and BC = 5. Find the cosecant of angle A. ∠C = 90° の直角三角形 ABC で、AB = 13、BC = 5 である。csc A（= 1/sin A）の値を求めよ。
言い間違えやすいところ
- 名前に co が付くが、cosecant は cos ではなく sin の逆数。cos の逆数は secant（エントリ secant）。
- csc は cosecant と読む。csc θ（= 1/sin θ）と sin⁻¹ θ（arcsin、エントリ arcsine）を取り違えない。
