日本の高校では cot を使わず 1/tan θ と書く。米国の教科書（OpenStax Algebra and Trigonometry）は cot を tan の逆数として定義し、sin・cos・tan と並べて扱う。
式と読み方
cotangent theta equals cosine theta over sine theta
定義
tan の逆数で表される三角関数。cot θ = 1/tan θ = cos θ/sin θ で、直角三角形では 隣辺 ÷ 対辺。
The trigonometric function that is the reciprocal of tangent: cot θ = 1/tan θ = cos θ/sin θ. In a right triangle, it is the adjacent side divided by the opposite side.
例文
話し言葉 Remember, cotangent is cosine over sine, so it's undefined wherever sine is zero. 思い出そう。コタンジェントはコサイン ÷ サインだから、サインが 0 になるところでは定義されない。
書き言葉・答案 Given that tan θ = 3/4, find the cotangent of θ. tan θ = 3/4 のとき、cot θ（= 1/tan θ）の値を求めよ。
言い間違えやすいところ
- cot は cotangent と読む（「コット」とは読まない）。
- cot θ（= 1/tan θ）と逆関数の arccot（cot⁻¹ θ）を取り違えない。tan⁻¹ θ も 1/tan θ ではなく arctan（エントリ arctangent）。
- θ = 90° では tan θ が定義されないが、cot θ = cos θ/sin θ = 0。1/tan θ より cos θ/sin θ の形で考えると安全。
