日本の高校では sec を使わず 1/cos θ と書く（1 + tan²θ = 1/cos²θ）。米国の教科書（OpenStax Algebra and Trigonometry）は sec を cos の逆数として定義し、微積分でも tan x の導関数を sec²x と書くように sec で表す。
式と読み方

定義
cos θ の逆数で定まる三角関数で、sec θ = 1/cos θ。直角三角形では、斜辺を角 θ の隣の辺で割った値になる。

話し言葉 Secant is just one over cosine, so if cosine is one half, the secant is 2. セカントは cos の逆数にすぎないから、cos が 1/2 なら sec は 2 だ。
書き言葉・答案 Given that θ is in Quadrant I and tan θ = 3/4, use the identity 1 + tan²θ = sec²θ to find the secant of θ. θ は第 1 象限の角で tan θ = 3/4 である。恒等式 1 + tan²θ = sec²θ を用いて、sec θ の値を求めよ。
言い間違えやすいところ
- 同じ英語の secant は、円や曲線と 2 点で交わる直線（割線）の意味にもなる（エントリ secant-line）。三角関数の sec か直線かは文脈で区別する。
- sec は cos の逆数で、sin の逆数ではない。sin の逆数は cosecant（エントリ cosecant）。
- sec θ は secant theta と読む。日本の 1 + tan²θ = 1/cos²θ は英語の式では 1 + tan²θ = sec²θ と書き、tan x の導関数も sec²x と書く。
