日本語の「割線」は、円と 2 点で交わる直線（方べきの定理で使う。日本語版 Wikipedia「割線」）。英語の secant line は、円に限らず曲線上の 2 点を通る直線にも使い、微積分では平均変化率を表す直線（the slope of the secant line）として多く出てくる。学習指導要領解説（数学II・III）には「割線」が出てこない。

定義
曲線上の 2 点を通る直線のこと。円では円と 2 点で交わる直線を指し、微積分ではその傾きが 2 点間の平均変化率になる。
A line through two points of a curve. For a circle, a line that crosses the circle at two points; in calculus, the slope of this line gives the average rate of change between those two x-values.
例文
話し言葉 As h goes to zero, the secant line gets closer and closer to the tangent line. h を 0 に近づけると、割線は接線にどんどん近づいていく。
書き言葉・答案 Find the slope of the secant line to the graph of f(x) = x² between x = 1 and x = 3. 関数 f(x) = x² のグラフ上の、x 座標が 1 と 3 である 2 点を通る直線の傾きを求めよ。
言い間違えやすいところ
- 「2 点を通る直線の傾き」「平均変化率」は、英語では secant line の傾きとして言う。用例コーパスでは secant line などの形が話し言葉・書き言葉ともよく出てくる。話し言葉は大半が Khan Academy、書き言葉は大半が OpenStax Calculus。
- secant は三角関数 sec θ（正割）と同じ語。直線を指すときは secant line と line を付けると紛れない。
- 弦（chord）は円周上の 2 点を結ぶ線分で、割線はそれを両側に延ばした直線。
