定義

用語の意味を、ほかの意味にとれないようにはっきり決めた文。定義は約束ごとなので、証明はしない。

A statement that tells exactly what a word or symbol means. A definition is agreed on, not proved.

例文

話し言葉 You don't prove a definition. By definition, an isosceles triangle has two equal sides, so for that step your reason is just "by definition." 定義は証明しない。定義より、二等辺三角形は 2 辺が等しいから、そこの理由は「定義より」と書けばいい。

書き言葉・答案 State the definition of an isosceles triangle. 二等辺三角形の定義を述べよ。

言い間違えやすいところ

「定義より」は by definition（冠詞を付けない）。何の定義かを言うときは by the definition of a midpoint のように the を付ける。
定義は証明するものではない。定義・公準をもとに証明して正しいとわかった事柄が定理（エントリ theorem）。
二等辺三角形の定義は「2 辺が等しい三角形」で、「2 つの底角が等しい」は定義から証明する定理（エントリ isosceles-triangle-theorem）。証明の理由を書くとき、定義と定理を取り違えない。
