A point at either end of a segment or the starting point of a ray; for an interval, either of the two numbers that bound it, so the endpoints of [a, b] are a and b.
To find the max on a closed interval, check the vertex and both endpoints.
Is the endpoint included? If it is, use a bracket; if not, use a parenthesis.
On the interval [0, 5], f(x) = x² − 4x + 1 has its minimum at the vertex x = 2 and its maximum at the endpoint x = 5. 0 ≦ x ≦ 5 において、f(x) = x² − 4x + 1 は頂点 x = 2 で最小、区間の端 x = 5 で最大となる。
- 英語は線分・半直線・区間のどの端も endpoint 1 語で言い(IM・OpenStax は end point と 2 語に綴ることもある)、「両端」は the endpoints (of the interval)。
