定義
ある量が、もとの量の半分に減るまでにかかる時間。最初の量 A₀、半減期 h のとき、t 時間後の量は A₀(1/2)^{t/h}。
The time it takes for an amount to decrease to half of what it was. If the starting amount is A₀ and the half-life is h, the amount left after time t is A₀(1/2)^(t/h).
例文
話し言葉 The half-life is 5 hours, so after 10 hours you've got a quarter of it left. 半減期が 5 時間だから、10 時間たつと 4 分の 1 が残る。
書き言葉・答案 A 200-milligram sample of a substance has a half-life of 8 days. How much of the sample remains after 24 days? 半減期が 8 日の物質の試料が 200 mg ある。24 日後に残っている量を求めよ。
言い間違えやすいところ
- 英語はハイフンを入れて half-life と書く。複数形は half-lives。
- 半減期の 2 倍の時間がたつと、0 ではなく 4 分の 1 が残る。減り方は一定の量ずつではなく、一定の割合ずつ（指数関数的減少、エントリ exponential-decay）。
- half-life は時間の長さで、残る量ではない。
