定義
x = a の近くで f(a) が最も大きいときの f(a) の値。
A value f(a) that is the largest among the values of f near x = a.
例文
話し言葉 f prime changes from positive to negative at x = 1, so there's a relative maximum there. x = 1 で f′ が正から負に変わるので、そこで極大になる。
書き言葉・答案 f has a local maximum value of 4 at x = −1. f は x = −1 で極大値 4 をとる。
言い間違えやすいところ
- 口頭では local max ／ relative max と略す。
- 区間全体での最大値は absolute maximum（global maximum）。極大値と取り違えない。
