見出しの「上昇分と水平移動分の比」は学習指導要領解説に無い、本プロジェクトの訳語。日本では「x が 1 増えると y がいくつ増えるか」「y の増加量 ÷ x の増加量」と言う。OpenStax Algebra and Trigonometry は傾きを rise over run と説明することがある。

定義
直線の傾きを、縦に上がった量（rise）を横に進んだ量（run）で割ったものとして覚える言い方。グラフ上で点から点へ「上に 2、右に 3」と数えれば、傾きは 2/3。
A way to remember slope as the vertical change (rise) divided by the horizontal change (run) between two points on a line. Going up 2 and right 3 from one point to another gives a slope of 2/3.
例文
話し言葉 Start at this point, go up 2 and over 3 to the next point, so rise over run gives us a slope of 2/3. この点から上に 2、右に 3 進むと次の点に着く。だから縦 ÷ 横で、傾きは 2/3。
書き言葉・答案 Use rise over run to find the slope of the line through the points (1, 4) and (3, 0) on the graph. グラフ上の 2 点 (1, 4)、(3, 0) を通る直線の傾きを、縦の変化 ÷ 横の変化で求めよ。
言い間違えやすいところ
- 右下がりの直線では rise が負になる。右に 2 進んで下に 4 下がれば、rise は −4、run は 2 で、傾きは −2。
- over は分数の線を読む語で、rise over run は「rise ÷ run」（run 分の rise）。順番を逆にしない。
- run は右向きに数える。左向きに数えるときは run も負にして、rise の符号と合わせて割る。
